The world’s smallest full-frame zoom, and color that finishes with a single button
Use cameras long enough and you learn this: between a good photo and a good result flows a long river called editing. However well you shoot, without the process of grading and refining, the photo isn’t finished. Crossing that river was always a chore.
The Panasonic Lumix S9 built a bridge across it. One button. Click. The color is applied.
And this time, the color I chose is Titanium Gold. Honestly, it’s almost too elegant.
Click, and the Color Is There
The heart of the S9 is Real Time LUT. A LUT is a preset that applies a specific color grade to photos and video, usually added afterward on a computer. The S9 applies it in the moment of shooting, inside the camera. You preview the finished color before you press the shutter.
The LUMIX Lab app extends this. Create your own color presets on your phone, transfer them to the camera, and apply them while shooting, not after. This isn’t just a time-saver. It changes how you approach the photograph itself.
Better still, you can borrow other people’s recipes. Download LUTs made by other creators from the official LUMIX website, load them into your camera, and one button applies their color to your photos. You don’t need the talent to create color, only the eye to choose it.
Shoot, click, transfer to phone, share immediately. The long river of editing became a short stream.
The World’s Smallest Full-Frame Zoom
The 18-40mm F4.5-6.3 kit lens is the quiet hero of this camera. Panasonic calls it the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame zoom lens. About 4cm long, around 155g. Closer to a pancake than a zoom.
And it starts at 18mm. Ultra-wide. Offering an 18mm ultra-wide angle on full-frame in a kit lens this size is rare. Tight interiors, wide landscapes, architecture, everyday snaps, all captured with this one lens. For someone like me who has to capture spaces widely on interior sites, starting at 18mm is especially welcome.
Kit lenses are usually objects of mild disappointment. You use them because they came bundled, then quickly want to upgrade. The S9’s 18-40mm is different. The combination of this tiny size and ultra-wide reach is itself the point. Mount it on the S9’s compact body, and a full-frame camera comes almost pocket-close.
The Titanium Gold Choice
The S9 comes in nine colors: Dark Olive, Night Blue, Crimson Red, Jet Black, Mint Green, Sakura, White Silver, Black Silver, and Titanium Gold. Choosing a camera by color says something about the S9’s character. This is not equipment. It’s an object. Something you carry, show, and use to express taste.
I chose Titanium Gold. Gold sounds loud, but in person it’s the opposite. Closer to a low-saturation champagne gold, its tone shifts subtly with the light. Restrained, calmly luxurious. The texture in the hand makes you want to carry it every day.
What to Know
The S9 is a camera for content creators. A 24.2MP full-frame sensor, in-body stabilization, phase-hybrid AF, and 6K open-gate recording are all inside. On paper it rivals higher-tier bodies.
But it’s a camera with a clear direction. The S9 has no viewfinder (EVF). You compose only with the rear LCD, which can be hard to see in bright sunlight. For someone expecting traditional camera handling, this may disappoint. It’s less a flaw than a personality. The S9 isn’t a camera you press to your eye. It’s one you shoot lightly from the screen and share immediately.
In Korea, the 18-40mm kit runs around 2 million won. In the US it recently dropped to $1,328 on sale, so pricing varies by timing and channel and is worth checking before buying.
Editor’s Note
I’ve used cameras for over twenty years. From Pentax through Nikon to Sony. Across all that time, cameras evolved toward shooting better. The S9 asks a slightly different question. What comes after shooting well, namely, how do you finish the photo and how do you share it.
One click applies the color, one click sends it to the phone, and it’s shared with the world. They say a good object, in the hands of someone who uses it well, keeps doing its job. The S9 shortened the distance to doing that job to an extreme. And in Titanium Gold, it made you want to hold that process in your hand every day.
When a daily object is beautiful, a lot gets forgiven. The S9 has little to forgive, and it’s beautiful anyway.
