Light has made its first flip phone. It is called the Light Flip.
The phone does not try to imitate a smartphone. There is no app store, no web browser and no infinite scroll. Light has kept to the direction it has held for years, which is to take things away rather than add them.
LightOS, an operating system stripped to the essentials
The Light Flip runs on LightOS, Light’s own operating system. What it holds is modest: phone, alarm, music, podcasts, calendar, directions and notes. There are no social feeds and no algorithms. Open it and you see the time and the date first. Close it and the day goes quiet.
Directions include an actual map, so you can find your way without being pulled back into a feed. That balance is the point of the design.
Modest specs that still cover the essentials
The Light Flip supports 5G and uses a 2.8-inch OLED display. It keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack and charges over USB-C. The 1,800mAh battery is user-replaceable. It carries an IP54 rating for dust and splashes and weighs around 160g. Six colors are available.
A headphone jack and a replaceable battery in the same device is a rare combination in a phone released today.
Price and release
The Light Flip starts at $299. Spread over a two-year plan, it begins at $39 per month. Pre-orders are open now, and the first units are expected to ship in April 2027.
Closing note
The Light Flip is not a phone that leads with performance. It is a phone that decided first what to leave out. For anyone who misses the feel of a flip phone, or who wants a little distance from the smartphone, there is a real reason to look closer. What remains after the subtraction is, in the end, up to the person holding it.
