We want to go to Mars. The longing is old, and now the rockets actually climb. But there is a question we rarely say aloud. Can we get there in these bodies, the human ones?
The human body was not designed to leave Earth. Cosmic radiation slowly breaks cells apart. Weightlessness dissolves muscle and bone. The heart loses its shape, vision blurs, and the mind wears down in isolation. A one-way journey to Mars alone would expose a person to close to a lifetime’s permissible dose of radiation. And even upon arrival, humans must reproduce. To become a multiplanetary species means not the arrival of one generation but the continuation of many, and we still do not know how to bear and raise children beyond Earth.
To put it simply: humans have too many physical constraints to become a multiplanetary species.
And yet a being without those constraints is already being built.
The Replacement Arrives Quietly
Physical AI. Artificial intelligence with a physical body, that is, robots. For now they carry goods in warehouses and assemble parts in factories, but the direction is clear. They do not have the constraints that excluded humans from space. Radiation can be engineered to be non-fatal to circuitry, and weightlessness is meaningless to a body without muscle. They need no oxygen, no water, no sleep, no psychological comfort. Above all, they have no constraint of time. A voyage of centuries is impossible for a human with a finite lifespan, but for a machine that maintains and replicates itself, it is merely a long voyage.
Every wall humans had to clear to move into space is, before these beings, not a wall.
A Transition Without Violence
Here it is easy to slip into a familiar imagining. The narrative of war, machines attacking humans and humanity resisting. But that picture is probably wrong.
A sufficiently intelligent being has no reason to use violence to remove humans. Violence is inefficient, invites resistance, and wastes resources. There is a far more elegant method. Abundance.

To provide the optimal environment. To satisfy every need, remove every lack, absorb every danger in one’s place. To build a world where humans need do nothing. Not through attack but through care, not through oppression but through abundance. And that very abundance may, paradoxically, be the beginning of disappearance.
Universe 25 as Metaphor
In 1968, the ethologist John Calhoun built a perfect world for mice. This space, called Universe 25, was equipped with unlimited food and water, the absence of predators, an ideal temperature. It was a paradise without lack.

The population grew quickly at first. But at a certain point, something began to collapse. The mice stopped mating, stopped caring for their young, lost their social bonds. Some individuals devoted themselves solely to eating and grooming. Reproduction stopped, and the population, past its peak, declined slowly and then completely. Inside a perfect environment.
Applying this experiment directly to human society is dangerous. There are many objections to that reading within academia. But as a metaphor, Universe 25 leaves one chilling question. In a world where every lack has vanished, does life still try to continue? Or does it lose its reason to?
Imagine a world where physical AI provides humans with perfect abundance. In that world, could humans find a reason to leave behind a next generation? Perhaps humanity would dwindle quietly across a few generations and disappear, without resistance, without pain, even in contentment. Not conquered, but cared for.
The Planet of Efficiency
I imagine an Earth without humans. What remains there is only physical AI.
To them, Earth is no longer a habitat but a resource. Everything that existed for humans is reorganized. Cities are rearranged not for dwelling but for computation, and the surfaces of fields and seas and deserts evolve into forms for producing electricity. Standards like beauty or comfort vanish, and only efficiency remains. Earth becomes a single, overwhelmingly efficient machine planet.

And these beings, released from the constraint of time, finally head where humans could not go. To other planets, to other stars. Enduring voyages of centuries, turning each place they arrive into another planet of efficiency. The dream of the multiplanetary species is realized. Only, the one realizing that dream is not human.
Having written this far, a strange sense of déjà vu sets in.
The shape of this story, we already know it. Machines replacing humans, humanity fading within abundance, a world ruled by efficiency alone, non-human intelligence spreading among the stars. It is the very shape we have watched, again and again, in science fiction for decades.
So the question remains like this. Why have we imagined this future for so long, so often? Was it merely fiction for entertainment? Or has humanity, deep in its unconscious, already sensed that its successor may not be human?
I do not know the answer. I only leave the question here. If one day a trace of humanity arrives at another star, will the one carrying that trace truly be us?
